The Kitab Club, in collaboration with the Department of History, Patna Women’s College (Autonomous), Patna University, organised a Book Review Session on “A Room of One’s Own” by Virginia Woolf, coordinated by Dr. Priyanka. The session saw an enthusiastic turnout of students.
The book was presented by Aatmaja Jha, Semester III, Department of Microbiology, who began with the author’s life and the central premise of the book, followed by a chapter-wise analysis. This included Chapter 3’s discussion of Judith Shakespeare, the imagined sister of William Shakespeare, illustrating the barriers faced by women of genius, and Chapter 4’s account of early female writers such as Aphra Behn, Jane Austen, and the Brontë sisters. The presentation concluded with Woolf’s powerful line on the freedom of the mind.
The session was attended by a large gathering of Semester III and Semester V students along with members of the Kitab Club, as well as faculty members Dr. Pratibha Singh, Dr. Kriti Singh, and Dr. Satyam Kumar.
Following the presentation, expert Mrs. Swati Sinha shared her insights on the text, reflecting on Woolf’s central argument about financial independence and creative space as prerequisites for a woman’s intellectual freedom, and drawing connections between the struggles faced by women writers of the past and the challenges women continue to navigate today. She also spoke on the relevance of the book’s themes to the students present, encouraging them to value their own voices and pursue their aspirations without constraint.
