On the occasion of National Handloom, the Department of Home Science in collaboration with Department of Fashion Designing organized a Guest Lecture followed by a Fashion Show on 7th August 2025 to commemorate the Indian Handloom Industry. The program was organised in the B.J. Sullivan Hall, from 12:00 noon. The program featured a Guest lecture and an interactive session by Mr. Subhash Kumar, Senior Professional (Design) at Bihar State Khadi & Village Industries Board and an alumnus of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Patna
The lecture, titled “Khadi and Modern Fashion Industry: From Freedom Fabric to Fashion Statement,” highlighted the importance of preserving and promoting traditional Handloom textiles of India. Mr. Kumar also discussed the significance of Khadi, its role in sustainable fashion, and the differences between Khadi and Handloom textiles. The lecture also emphasized Khadi’s potential as a fashion fabric, showcasing its versatility and eco-friendliness. He shared insights on how Khadi, supports local artisans, and promotes India’s rich textile heritage. He also informed students regarding the assistance provided by The Government for startups, specially for Kadhi and Handloom sector.
The guest lecture was followed by a vibrant fashion show where 75 students from Department of Home Science and Department of Fashion Designing participated. The fashion show was divided into three rounds: – Traditional Saree Round: Showcasing the elegance of traditional Indian sarees. Indo Western Round: Blending traditional elements with modern western styles. Gramin Khadi Round: Highlighting the beauty and sustainability of rural Khadi textiles.
The program was organized under the supervision of Dr. Sr. M. Tanisha A.C., Head, Department of Home Science. The faculty members of Department of Home Science, Fashion Designing, Psychology, History, Commerce and 127 students were present for the event. The program was a great success and was appreciated by all. The event highlighted India’s handloom heritage thus making the young generation more aware and sensitive towards the rich legacy of Indian Handlooms.
