The Department of Sociology at Patna Women’s College (Autonomous) celebrated Mandela Day to mark the birth anniversary of the legendary world leader, Nelson Mandela (18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013). To commemorate this occasion, the department organised a speech competition on the topic “Life and Legacy of Nelson Mandela.” The purpose of the event was to honour the life and struggles of Nelson Mandela, raise awareness about his contributions, and draw inspiration from his journey to better understand, address, and dismantle current unjust social structures.
During the competition, students emphasised his contributions and noted that since social evils are human-constructed, they can be eliminated. They highlighted that every human being deserves dignity, equality, and justice, and explained how the policy of apartheid segregated the population and caused exploitation based on skin colour. Students also underscored his famous idea that “it always seems impossible until it’s done,” reminding the audience that he was not just a leader of South Africa, but a global leader for humanity. The event served as a reminder that no matter how massive an evil appears, it will be defeated if fought with a pure heart, as truth always triumphs.
A total of nine students participated in the competition, each presenting a different aspect of the legendary leader’s life and struggle. Among them, Ujjaini secured the first position, while Sambhavi and Trisha Prakash were named the first and second runners-up, respectively. The event was successfully conducted under the leadership of Dr Ragini Ranjan, Head of the Department, alongside faculty members Dr Anil Kumar, Komal Kumari, Dr Anita Kumari, and Dr Tabassum. The panel of invited judges included Dr. Aradhana Kumari from the Department of Psychology and Dr Aprajita Pathak from the Department of Mass Communication. The programme was coordinated and anchored by Alka and Divyasha.. Students from the Department of Sociology actively participated and attended the entire session, drawing deep inspiration from the life and struggles of Nelson Mandela.
