he Department of Sociology,Patna Women’s College organized a workshop on “Sensitization Program on Transgender” on 14th March, 2026 at MTH to promote awareness about gender equality and social inclusion. The programme aimed to help students understand gender diversity and encourage a respectful attitude toward transgender individuals in society.
The resource persons were Reshma Prasad and Prashant Kumar, who discussed important concepts such as sex, gender, and gender identity. They explained that sex refers to biological characteristics, while gender is shaped by social roles and expectations. They also described transgender as an umbrella term for individuals whose gender identity differs from the sex assigned at birth.
The speakers highlighted the Indian context, noting that transgender individuals have long existed in Indian culture but still face discrimination and social stigma. The session also discussed important legal protections such as the landmark NALSA v. Union of India (2014) judgement and the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, which aim to ensure equality and protection from discrimination.
The workshop was interactive, and students actively participated by asking questions and sharing their views. Overall, the programme was informative and encouraged students to promote empathy, equality, and inclusivity in society. The beneficiary of the workshop was 160.
